Jennifer Lynn Lopez is an American singer, actress, dancer, fashion designer, and entrepreneur. She is best known for beginning her career in Hollywood as a Fly Girl on the hit television show In Living Color in 1991. She left the show in 1993 to begin a professional acting career. She landed her first leading role playing in the biopic of deceased Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in 1997, making her the first Latina actress to earn $1 million. Lopez went on to venture into more films and has become one of Hollywood's top Latina actresses of all time. In 1999, she began her singing career with the release of her debut album On the 6 in 1999. With a cumulative film gross of $3.1 billion and estimated global sales of 70 million records, Lopez is regarded as the most influential Latin entertainer in North America.

Early Career

opez's first professional job came in 1989 when she spent five months touring Europe with the musical revue show Golden Musicals of Broadway. In 1990, she danced alongside MC Hammer in an episode of Yo! MTV Raps and traveled around Japan for four months as a chorus member in Synchronicity. When she returned to the U.S., she continued to appear as a dancer in high-profile musicals in New York and also began appearing in more music videos including songs by New Kids on the Block, Doug E. Fresh, Richard Rogers, EPMD, and Samantha Fox.

In 1991, Lopez landed the role as a Fly Girl for the new Fox TV series In Living Color. She moved to Los Angeles to accompany the role and spent the next three seasons dancing on the series. After the show, she went on tour as a back up tour for Janet Jackson and appeared in Jackson's "That's the Way Love Goes" music video. he was scheduled to tour with Jackson on her Janet World Tour in late 1993 but opted to pursue an acting career instead. Lopez's first professional acting job was a small recurring role on the television show South Central in 1994. Bit parts followed including co-starring in 1995's Money Train alongside Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes and alongside Robin Williams in 1996's Jack. Another co-starring role popped up alongside Hollywood A-listers Jack Nicholson and Michael Caine in 1997's Blood and Wine.

Breakthrough

Lopez starred as the title role of the Selena biopic of the same name in March 1997. Lopez was paid $1 million for the role, making her the highest paid Latina actress in Hollywood history. Because of the singing in the film, Lopez began attempting a musical career and sent demos in Spanish to Sony Music.

More blockbuster film work followed in 1997 with horror film Anaconda and U Turn. In June 1998, Lopez starred opposite George Clooney in Out of Sight, Steven Soderbergh's adaptation of Elmore Leonard's novel of the same name where she won high praise from critics. In October 1998, she provided voiceover work for the beloved children's film Antz.

In May 1999, Sony released the first single for Lopez's debut album "If You Had My Love" from On the 6. Many were worried that if the album would fail it would tank her career. "If You Had My Love" debuted at number 72 on the US Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending May 15, 1999, and moved to number 64 in its second week. By early June, it reached number 1 and her recording career took off. As of 2017, the single has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. To date, On the 6 has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

On February 23, 2000 at the 42nd Grammy Awards Lopez garnered even more national attention from a plunging neckline green Versace dress she wore on the red carpet to the event. The dress generated controversy and media attention, with images of Lopez in the dress being downloaded from the Grammy website over half a million times within 24 hours of the event. She would returned to the big screen by the end of the year in the thriller The Cell opposite Vince Vaughn and Vincent D'Onofrio.

She would release her second album J.Lo in January 2001, which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. During the same week, her romantic comedy film The Wedding Planner in which she starred opposite Matthew McConaughey opened atop the box office. This made her the first woman to have a number one film and album simultaneously in the United States. In April 2001, Lopez launched J.Lo by Jennifer Lopez, her own clothing and accessory company. The following month, she starred in the romantic drama film Angel Eyes, which performed disappointingly at the box office and generated mixed reviews. After Sony music's Tommy Mottola's decision, rapper Ja Rule remixed the song "I'm Real" and released it in June, and it instantly rose to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Setbacks and Rebirth

In August 2003, Lopez starred opposite her then-fiancé Ben Affleck in the film Gigli. The film was a box office bomb and is considered one of the worst films of all time. The film's poor reception was attributed to negative press preceding its release, as well as the media attention surrounding Lopez and Affleck's engagement which largely overshadowed the film. In October of that year, she released her next fragrance, Still Jennifer Lopez. Lopez also launched her next fashion label, Sweetface. In September 2007, Lopez starred in the biographical film El Cantante, which is based on the life of the late salsa singer Héctor Lavoe. In the film, Lavoe is portrayed by Lopez's then-husband Marc Anthony while Lopez plays Lavoe's wife Puchi. Lopez's sixth studio album Brave, released in October, was her lowest-charting album worldwide. Later Career and Present Projects

In January 2012, Lopez returned as a judge on the eleventh season of American Idol while also starring in a new talent show, ¡Q'Viva! The Chosen, created by Simon Fuller which premiered on Univision. On May 18, Lopez returned to the big screen starring alongside an ensemble cast in the film What to Expect When You're Expecting, which was a moderate box office hit. In late May, Lopez released her fragrance Glowing by JLo and in July she launched Teeology, a luxury T-shirt e-commerce. Lopez voiced Shira, a saber tooth tiger, in the animated film, Ice Age: Continental Drift, the fourth film in the Ice Age franchise, which debuted in late July. In January 2013, Lopez starred alongside Jason Statham in the crime thriller Parker, which did moderately well at the box office but was largely panned by critics. In May, Lopez was announced as the chief creative officer of nuvoTV. In addition, she founded the mobile phone retail brand Viva Móvil, which is catered specifically for Latinos. Lopez returned as judge on American Idol for its thirteenth season in late 2013. Lopez began recording her eighth studio album, A.K.A. after her world tour for her previous album concluded. Reviews for the film were mixed and it performed poorly at the box office.

Also in September 2019, it was announced that Lopez would co-headline the Super Bowl LIV halftime show alongside Shakira in February 2020 in Miami, Florida. Lopez executive produced and appeared in an episode of Thanks a Million, a series with a "pay it forward" theme which premiered on Quibi in April 2020.That month, Lopez also appeared in the television special One World: Together at Home, performing a rendition of "People" by Barbra Streisand, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. hat December, Lopez headlined the entertainment segment of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest in Times Square.

n January 2021, Lopez launched her skincare line, JLo Beauty and also performed at the inauguration of President Joe Biden. In June 2021, it was announced that Lopez (through Nuyorican Productions) had signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to produce a range of films and television shows. She recently also released two more Spanish-language singles. Lopez will next star in Marry Me opposite Owen Wilson for Universal Pictures, which is set to be released on February 11, 2022. She also has several other films currently in the works set to be released over the next 2 years.
